It’s been more than a year since Jung Kook released his only solo album (at least so far), Golden. That title has proved to be a fitting one for the collection, as it was a hit when it first arrived, and now it’s become a bestseller yet again, long after many other pop sets have faded from memory.
Jung Kook’s first release outside of his work with BTS, the band that made him a global star, sold just under 10,300 copies in America during the most recent tracking period. According to Luminate, the same project didn’t even hit 350 purchases the frame before.
Those numbers show that interest in buying Golden exploded in a relatively short span of time. Jung Kook’s first offering on his own enjoys a 2,860% sales bump from one week to the next—but why?
13 months after the album was first released, Golden was finally offered for sale on vinyl. Wax records have become collectibles for millions of fans of certain musicians, and while they nearly disappeared completely, they are now not only back in a major way, but big business for record labels and retailers. Golden finally shipped on vinyl in the U.S. in mid-December, and clearly, there was an interest in the title.
Golden rebounds onto the Billboard charts this week, thanks to a sizable sales figure. The title reappears on a pair of lists, while simultaneously managing to debut on another, earning Jung Kook his first solo smash on that ranking.
Jung Kook finds his way back to both the Billboard 200 and the Top Album Sales charts this week, thanks to Golden’s large sales bump. The title can be found at No. 109 on the all-encompassing list of the most-consumed full-lengths in America. It sits even higher, at No. 21, on the purchase-centric tally.
Golden also debuts on the Vinyl Albums chart, as its release on the medium is almost completely to thank for its renewed presence on the Billboard tallies. The set nearly earns Jung Kook his first top 10 on his inaugural visit, as it launches at No. 11.
